Uzbekistan Geography

General

Uzbekistan is located in central Asia bordering the Aral Sea, between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Comparatively, it is approximately the size of Morocco, with a total area of 447,400 sq km (172,742 sq mi). Uzbekistan shares boundaries with Kazakhstan on the north, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on the east, Afghanistan on the south, and Turkmenistan on the southwest. Uzbekistan's boundary length totals 6,221 km (3,866 mi). Its capital city, Tashkent, is located in the eastern part of the country.

Uzbekistan is a dry, landlocked country; it is one of two double-landlocked countries in the world, i.e, a country completely surrounded by land-locked countries – the other being Liechtenstein. Less than 10% of its territory is intensively cultivated irrigated land in river valleys and oases. The rest is vast desert (Kyzyl Kum) and mountains. The highest point in Uzbekistan is 4,643 m (15,233 ft), located in the southern part of the Gissar Range in Surkhandarya Province, on the border with Tajikistan, just north-west of Dushanbe (formerly called Peak of the 22nd Congress of the Communist Party, today apparently unnamed).

The climate is mid-latitude climatic desert. Temperatures range from 26° to 32°C (79° to 90°F) in the summer, with much higher figures in the desert. Average winter temperatures are between -6° and 2°C (21° to 36°F). There is very little rainfall in the country. The best watered areas only receive about 30 cm (12 in) annually.
